Editing & proofreading for non-fiction writers
Are you a small business owner? Do you represent an organisation? Are you a writer of non-fiction? Welcome – I’m here to support you with your writing.
What I can do to help you
Not sure if you really need a professional editor or proofreader?
Every piece of writing that you publish gives the world a little insight into you. Who you are, what you stand for, and what your goals are. That’s why it’s so important to make sure it reflects how you want to be perceived.
When you think your work is ready for publication, ask yourself these three questions:
1. Do my words really say what I think they say?
You want to communicate your expertise and ideas as clearly as possible.
My objective eye enables me to flag any messages that are ambiguous and need clarification.
2. Does my writing achieve what I want it to?
You write with a purpose in mind, and it’s important that your text reflects that purpose so it can achieve what you want it to.
My expertise will help ensure your writing conveys your message to your intended reader both accurately and effectively.
3. Is my writing the very best it can be?
You want your writing to demonstrate your professionalism and credibility. An error or a typo may seem minor, but both can have a major impact on how you’re perceived by your audience.
Proofreading is like quality control for text. My eye for detail allows me to spot and tidy up any errors so you can feel confident you’re publishing a professional piece of work.

SERVICES
I offer both copyediting and proofreading services.
Not sure which service you need? Read on to find out what each one involves.
What does a proofreader do?
Language use
For a basic proofread, I’ll read your text carefully to check that the grammar, spelling, punctuation and words that you’ve chosen are used both accurately and consistently. As an advocate of conscious language, I’ll also highlight any language that is potentially harmful to your readers.
Layout
If your text has already been made up into its final format (for example, a magazine or a presentation), I’ll also check things like spacing, alignment and text styles.
What does a proofreader not do?
When I’m proofreading, I won’t routinely check any data you’ve included or rewrite any of your sentences.
For a piece of writing that needs more attention, I recommend copyediting.
What does a copyeditor do?
Language use
During the copyediting stage, I’ll edit your writing to make sure that your grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage are accurate. If I come across any language that is potentially harmful to your readers, I’ll suggest alternatives.
Purpose and flow
I’ll also make sure that your writing flows well, that there is consistency throughout, and that it serves the purpose you intend for it. This may involve rewording small sections, but I will do this without removing your voice.
Style sheet
If you don’t already have one, I’ll also provide you with a style sheet to use whenever you work on a writing project. This list of all of your editorial and formatting decisions will be an invaluable reference to ensure your style is consistent across all projects.

HOW MUCH DO EDITING & PROOFREADING COST?
I offer three types of service, two of which are fixed-rate plans or packages. All rates are in Australian dollars (AU$).
A small business content package will set you back between AU$65 and AU$85, depending on the type of content and the level of editing you require.
If you choose an Editor on Demand plan, you’ll pay between AU$435 and AU$750, depending on the number of hours of support you’d like from me over a three-month period.
For copyediting and proofreading of non-fiction projects, I charge flat project fees that I determine after a chat with you about your project and your needs. This is so you know from the start how much the job will cost to complete. However, if your project is more suited to a quote based on a per-word rate, I’m happy to discuss this with you.
I may ask to see a sample of your work, and if you need help with a longer project, we can discuss a sample copyedit or proofread so you can feel confident that I’m the right professional for you.
